Question:

I have a 3 story house in Montreal, Quebec
and the water pressure is not all that
great on the 3th floor and the frist
time of the day the water come out rust
but only for 1/2 a sec. Is there any way to clean the pipes or do I have to replace them? This house is about 70 years old andwe use city water there is no pump.

Answer:

You're no doubt dealing with glavanized supply lines an sooner or later they'll need to be remplaced. Pressure drops because the horizontal lengths of pipe are now corroded to the point where water is not passing as good as it once did. The rust is just that portion of the corrosion which has settled in the taps overnight and tells the whole story.
