Expert Q Ren Molnar Q&A Archive
Top > Plumbing > Weed

Question:

We live in the country in a 13 yr old bungalow but the well is considerably older (maybe30 yrs?). Our problem is silt/dirt in the water. We do not have a submersible pump and the top of the well casing is below ground level, so we know that we need to get that fixed for sure (as we do have surface water seeping in after a rain). In the last year however, the water seems to be murky after even one shower or load of laundry. I called a plumber and he thought maybe the well casing has developed a hole somewhere near the bottom and he suggested we call a well driller. My questions are: Is the well driller the right person to call? Do you think this might be the problem? Can this be done in winter (and fix the surface casing problem as well)? Lots of questions! Can you give me some advice?

Answer:

You've already been given the only advice you can follow and that is to get a well driller in there quick. They'll be able to answer all your questions and probably add more information than you ever thought you wanted to know. That surface water seepage is something they'll be quite concerned with so be prepared. My feeling is that the seepage is where all your problems started.
