Question:

There appears to be no bacterial action in our septic tank. What do you suggest? This is a recent problem. The tank is likely about 50 years old (in a rental property). Do you know what genus/species of bacteria is the main one for decomposing the waste?

Answer:

Try dumping a package of baker's yeast into a toilet and flush it right away. That has been working for me for decades. If it doesn't, I think a serious conversation with the landlord is in order.
