Question:

I live in an "older" house in Osgoode, Ontario on septic system. I recently noticed that the stack pipe for my toilet etc. in the basement has pitting and green on it. I suspect the stack pipe is copper. The green looks like the stuff you find on an old penny that has been in the ground. I have also smelled odours of the septic tank in the area just above where the stack joins the pipes that go out to the septic tank. This is not regular but I suspect there is a hole in the stack. Can the stack pipe be repaired, or do I have to have it ripped out and replaced?

Answer:

The stack is finished and because of the health hazard it can cause, you're best off to replace it back to where it is firm and in good condition.
