Question:

Is there a bylaw requiring me to put ceramic, marble or some sort of tile on the floor in front of my newly installed gas fireplace?

Answer:

The norm is to have at least an 18-inch, non-combustible hearth in front of a fossel fuel fireplace but gas is different because it normally has an enclosed firebox. You'll do well to check with city hall on this one. You'll be needing a permit to put it in anyway.
