Question:

Hi Ren, we've had a woodburning fireplace insert in our family room replaced with a gas fireplace unit. The flue tile and masonary were cleaned by a chimney cleaning firm prior to the gas insert instalation, however on damp days the smell of soot and creosote fills the family room. We obviously need to wash the inside of the flue and old firebox with brush and something to neutralize and remove the creosote. Will amonia do it?

Answer:

This should not be happening. Before you do anything else, you might check the ownership manual regarding chimney requirements for your new unit. There may very well be a mis-match here.
