Question:

When shingling a shed roof (gabled) is there any real advantage to applying tar paper between the wood and the shingles?

Answer:

I've picked apart many roofs in the past four or so decades and found that when tar paper was used, there was little if any rotted roof sheathing. When tarpaper wasn't used, replacing roof sheathing was a major phase of the project so I can't recommend skipping it.
