Question:

Assuming that the problem behind the ice build-up is a lack of ventilation in the soffits or insulation sliding down and covering the soffits,or a lack of vapour barrier under the insulation in the roof cavity, how, specifically, can we fix the problem(s)? When installing a new roof, what materials should you cover the plywood on the roof with prior to putting on the shingles? How far up to the peak?

Answer:

In whatever manner possble, aiar has to be permitted to travel from the soffits to the uppermost peak of the roof where a ridge vent with baffles will permit it to exhaust. I always want ice and water shield under the shingles to go up high enough to be at least nine inches past the exterior walls. If this happens to be a low slope roof (less than 3 in 12') I want the ice and water shield going all the way up to the ridge vent.
