Question:

I love your show and find the advise that you give very helpful. I am in the process of making my own shower stall in the basement. I called in a coulpe of weeks ago and asked about the instalation of concrete board and membrain. I now have these materials but I am unsure how to install them. I assume that the membrane goes directly on the cement floor and the cement that I am going to pour goes on top of the membrane and then I will install the ceramic tiles. Is this correct?
2.The membrane I assume is to make the floor of the shower water proof. If this is so how do I seal around the drain? 3. The next is the cement board. Is it installed prior to pouring the floor.

Answer:

You're on the right track all the way. You can seal around the drain with silicone under the flange of the drain mechanizm and it works very well. I've seen the wall cladding go on before and after the floor was poured and when I did it, I put it on before. That seems to have held for quite a few years as we do not yet have leaks.
