I have a renovated 100 year old stone schoolhouse with an addition. There are some gaps between the stone wall and where the flashing of the roof meets it. The gaps are wide enough in areas for bats to take up residence which they have. I will getting rid of the bats over the next couple of weeks and I want to make sure to seal up the access. I read on the internet that I should buy caulking with something called oakum in it. I went to a few stores and cannot find such a product. What type of caulking or filler would you recommend using to seal up these gaps between the stone wall and the eaves.
Answer:
I don't know where you are located but I do know that old hardware stores will have it and so will older marine services. Oakum used to be about the only thing to seal leaks in boats and ships with. There is an old hardware store in Ottawa, Ontario, that carries in stock but other than that, about the only places I know of would be along the seaboard.
