Question:

I just bought a house that was built in 1986 that has melamine kitchen cabinet. The counter is damaged in a few places so I would like to replaces it. What are the steps to do so?

Answer:

First you shut off all the water to the kitchen (and the whole house if necessary) and then you remove the sink and taps. If you look under the counter top, you'll see screws going through the upper cross pieces into the bottom of the counter top. Remove them and when you do, the counter top should just lift off. Put your new counter top into place and screw it down like the old one was. Turn the sink upside down where you plan to install it and draw a pencil line around the flange. Remove the sink and draw another pencil line 5/8" inside the first one. Cut along the inner line and make sure the sink fits. Now you can spread a heavy bead of silicone caulking onto the bottom of the sink lip and put it into place and tighten the fasteners. For the taps you'll just follow what you picked apart and that's it. You're done!
