Question:

I have two steel entry doors that are leaking a brownish sticky substance down the face of the doors from under the windows. Neither door faces outside, they both open onto enclosed sun porches. How would I be able to solve this problem? Would I remove the caulking all the way around the windows and apply new caulking? What kind of caulking would I use? What is this substance and how can I get what has leaked down the doors off?

Answer:

I have a feeling you have storm doors over these units and the brown stuff you're seeing is the insulation within the doors breaking down. To rectify, remove the windows and scrape away what is loose caulking and insulation before re-insulating and re-caulking with a product that won't break down under similar circumstances.
