I would like to say what a pleasure it is to awaken on a Saturday morning and listen to your tips, advice and humour. An excellent show. I am in the process of building a wooden garden shed and if I am not mistaken, you recommend building it on a solid wooden frame and floor using deck blocks to support the structure. I intend to insulate and heat the out-building using it as a garden shed cum workshop. I know I have to insulate the walls and ceiling, but do I also insulate the floor and install a vapour barrier (barrier going on the warm side of the building)? (The building will be about 6" - 8" above ground level).
Answer:
I don't know that I'd raise it off the ground that much. My suggestion is to build a 6X6 P.T. wood frame and build it on that. The frame could then be filled with compacted gravel and stone dust up to within 2" of the top. Interlocking stone can now be added to give you a good, durable, versatile floor. The walls and ceiling would still be insulated with VB on the heated side of the insulation. A building this size is not going to take a lot to heat it but the floor will be forever cold.
