Question:

Thanks for the response on the first question, now here is a follow up. The room has wall to wall carpet, just installed, and I don't want to cut the carpet where the closet wall is goint to be erected. We muse over making the wall a floating wall, basically letting it sit on the floor, and screwing it in the wall and ceiling, leaving the carpet as is. Another thought was to add to the footing of the wall, some cut pieces of 2x4 or 2x3 what ever we decide to use, and use them as feet spaced every 16 inches along the base 2x4, which would get covered by a baseboard. Bottom line can I leave the carpet in place where the bottom 2x4 of the closet wall will sit?

Answer:

You'll do less damage to the carpet if you put furniture feet under the sole plate of the wall. Once they're in place, drilling pilot holes for 3" nails (every 12" or so) that you'll drive in far enough for the head to only meet the sole plate will hold it in place. You can still attach it to the walls and ceiling and then add the baseboards. The idea here is to keep the bottom of the wall from moving laterally. Good quality furniture feet that are meant to protect carpets should do that for you and the 3" nails will have the integrity to keep them from walking.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
