Question:

I have just started building a sidewalk made from interlocking brick. Several people have given me their expertise on this subject and surprise, surprise none of the information is the same. I have been told that I should put anywhere from 4" to 18" of crushed rock down. Some say I should use a vibrator after I lay the stones down others say this is not necessary. Could you please tell me the proper way of laying a stone sidewalk.

Answer:

If its just a walkway, no vehicular traffic, then go down about a 12" and use the vibrator compactor constantly while laying the gravel. At the nine-inch level, change to stone dust but keep the vibrator going and make sure everything is level. At the 11-inch level, lay in the stone and next spring, everything will be at grass level. An inch isn't too much for things to settle.
