I know the purpose of teleposts or support posts, but don't actually know how to work them. I have no idea what the impact of "1/2 a turn" would be.

The posts are jacks and a half turn raises the beam slightly but I think you'll still get plaster cracking throughout the house if you have to go up more than an inch or so.
