Question:

Listen to the show as much as possible in Thunder Bay, Ontario. I am going to put a 21' round, above ground pool in the back yard. I have looked at getting the permits. The yard has a lot of clay in it, so I am removing 23' diameter and down 2 feet. I am going to use the clay elsewhere in the yard. I am going to back fill with granular "A" material. Can I compact this all at once or in levels and if levels how much at a time? I was going to rent a 476-pound plate compactor, used it for my side walk project and worked great on one foot of granular "A".

Answer:

You should be able to compact all that in layers no thicker than three or four inches - in other words, someone is spreading and the compactor doesn't stop.
