Question:

I want to remove a rear cement porch. The sides look like brick, but the top can't be. It is sinking toward the house side. What is the best way - get rid of it or replace with a larger wood deck? Can I just sledge hammer and should I start with sides or top?

Answer:

I don't think I'd be anxious to take to something like this with a sledge hammer unless I knew that breaking it in half wouldn't damage anything. In other words, I'd want it to be a small unit or I'd get someone with a winch to pull it away from the house so it can be determined whether hammering it will work or not.
