Expert Q Ren Molnar Q&A Archive
Top > Vents > Skylight/Dormer

Question:

My problem is a bedroom that has a skylight. This room has a sloped tunnel (for lack of a better term) that in the winter develpes humidity on the glass and then proceeds to drip down the wall especially along the corner joint, and has made a big mess of the drywall. I can patch that but am just not sure how to vent this to the interior of the attic and then outside so that the moisture does not cause any other problems.

Answer:

Nothing should ever be vented into the attic. You might arrange for a fan to be aimed at the skylight well and that would keep air moving from it before it condenses. You might also try something else: Warm air ends up on the skylight lens because warm air is lighter than cooler air. The lens is an ideal place for it to condense because there is a major temperature difference from one side of it to the other. About the only remedy I've found here is to install a fabricated 4X4 beam inside the skylight well and high enough up to accommodate a large diameter ceiling fan. The beam is wired and installed firmly because the fan will need that kind of support. Neither should the fan ever be turned off. It will blow air downward at slow speed keeping the well cooler and getting away from it causing condensation to form.
