Question:

I recently bought a new dryer and discovered my vent was plastic and ran the full width of the house. I understand this is a fire hazard and an inefficient way of doing it. Our laundry room is in the centre of the house, not on an outside wall. It is next to the garage. My husband wants to vent the dryer into the garage. I think we should run the vent across the top of the garage and vent it to the outside of the other side of the garage. Would it need to be insulated? Can we do this ourselves? Help! I need my dryer!!!
P.s. I love your show.

Answer:

Almost anything is better than the corrugated plastic duct so let's start there. Rigid metal ducting is the best way to go of course, but besides that, all seams and joints in the duct have to be taped and the complete length should not exceed 22 feet with not more than two elbows. Ramifications of venting it into the garage are far worse than the situation you have now. Auto body work costs more than ducting and labour and you might even be able to throw in a new dryer.
