Top > Basement & Crawl Space > Ceiling

Question:

I just happened to catch an interview with you on a Kelowna, British Columbia radio programme last week and by chance you gave the reason for a problem I am having. We moved into this house four months ago and when the heating came on in the fall we found out that the duct work is making a lot of noise. I realize it is the expansion and contraction of the ductwork but what do we do to solve this? The noise continues for a long time after the furnace has gone off. The ceiling in the basement is a suspended ceiling so the ductwork is accessible. I certainly hope you are able to help us as we have contacted several heating companies and they more or less just shrug.

Answer:

If it's the plenums that are "oil canning" you can determine exactly where it is happening and place a brick on top of the plenum in that area. If it's the ducts themselves, you might have to wrap them with insulation to modify the rate at which they re-act to temperature change.
