Top > Basement & Crawl Space > Concrete

Question:

Ren, what is your thought on this? We are building a new house; should we use shellac instead of a sealer for the basement floor? We will never finish the basement other than putting stick tiles on the floor eventually. Someone told us that this was better than and cheaper than a sealer.

Answer:

You are about to learn the difference between cheaper and less expensive. The shellac idea is cheaper. I would wait the normal minimum two seasons and then seal the floor with an appropriate product. Shellac may very well reject the tiles you're thinking of putting on.
