I have a 14 yr old brick bungalow with a typical poured basement foundation. I would like to add a natural light source such as glass block or a window in a wall which currently has no window. I'm wondering what the most efficient way is to add light. (Maybe just adding electrical lighting looks good.) I wonder if ,say, sawing the foundation could introduce cracks in my foundation or disturb the bricks that are above it. Access to the outside of the wall is easy, in my opinion. I'm asking for some things to consider.
Answer:
Depending on the width of the window you're thinking about, cutting the foundtion wall is not a problem. Up to about three feet long, I would not worry about it and it should not have a negative impact on the rest of the foundtion wall. I have to admit though, plugging in a light is much easier than cutting the masonry wall.
