Top > Horticulture > Septic

Question:

We would dearly like to landscape our yard with some nice trees and bushes etc, but the septic field is right there. What kind of bushes or trees have a root system that would not go down too far. Our bed is a trench style, so the pipes are about 3' in the ground.
many thanks

Answer:

Septic beds are not the place for trees and shrubs because of the obvious root hazards. Your local nursery should be able to help. I always planned on rose roots going no deeper than 18 inches but I'm not sure of that and have never tried putting them over the septic.
