Question:

I would like to put a protective coating on the table to protect it from heat etc. If I relied on my family to use saucers, my table would be a mess in one day!

Answer:

You might get in touch with a plastics company and talk to them about a process which I think is called "Decollage". Since your last query I did some research and then remembered seeing fast food restaurants use it on tables with various photos, menus, etc. under a quarter-inch or so thickness of what appeared to be plexi-glass that covered the table top and then was molded to cover also the sides and a rim of about a half-inch of the bottom.
