Question:

What is a rule of thumb re: size of tile. Ex: Kitchen is 9' x 10 1/2'. My husband says small room, small tiles; large room large tiles. I disagree on this because I believe the larger tiles and lighter color make the room look bigger and the smaller the tiles make the room look crowded. He thinks with the size of kitchen we have 8" x 8" is large enough. I would like to see a tile 12" x 12". What is your expert opinion in this. We have an 'old' book saying small room small tiles and large room large tiles. Can one still find tiles 8" x 8"? I hope not!!!

Answer:

I'm afraid you're out of luck. The 8X8s are still sold and are indeed very popular. The smaller the tile, the less likely it is to snap if the sub-flooring beneath it flexes when someone walks on it. On the other hand, small room, small tile - - - - appears to have about gone with black&white TV. Interior designers appear to have blown it away along with a lot of other 'rules of thumb'. In short, if you have at least an inch and a half of wood sub-flooring under them, both ceramic and pocelain tiles should have no trouble surviving.
