I have just recently purchased a cottage. The cottage is just under 1000 sqft. Several coloums of blocks (18) sit on floating concrete pads. About 2'*2' and 3" thick. We have been using the cottage in the winter for a few days at a time and this trip I noticed the doors will not close properly and the glass in the windows are shifting. Is it a good idea to redo the foundation i.e. sona tubes etc. and if so what is the best approach?
Answer:
You're dealing with seasonal shifting and that will continue for ever. Depending on soil conditions, you may have to tollerate that and if that's the case, you should look into screw jacks placed strategically under the supporting beam(s) and adjusting them as needed. These jacks, by the way, are easy to find and quite inexpensive at car junk yards.
