Question:

I have a mouldy musty smell coming from a store room on the first floor of my 3 level towhouse. It appears to be coming from a crack in the ceiling joist. I cut some holes in the wall above but have not been able to find the source. (not coming from the room itself) Is there a company that specializes in finding the source of the smell? I suspect it may be coming down the wall from the skylight on the top floor but there is not visible sign of leakage.

Answer:

Just because you don't see it, there could well rot taking place inside a wall somewhere under the skylight and that is the first thing I'd want checked. A roofer would probably be able to tell you a lot about it but you may still need to open things up inside. If you're experiencing a lot of condensation on the skylight this would be my first suspicion.
