Question:

Hi Ren:

I heard if you put a steel door up you can't have a screen door to go with it because it makes the warranty void. Is this true? Why do people still do it if that is the case? Is there a way to do it so it won't affect your steel door warranty?

Answer:

Not always is the caveate clearly stated but if you seal things up too tightly, you can create a heat build-up between the two doors such that it cooks the insulation out of your metal prime door. I avoid this by installing the storm door exactly according to the instructions that come with it but I do not apply the bead of caulking compound along the top of the storm door frame thereby permitting warm air, as it naturally rises, to be expelled and do away with the possible consequences.
