Question:

i am putting a second stoey on our house. we have contracted out the actual construction but to save money i want to redo the main floor myself. this includes relocting a number of windows and doors. I am a pretty efficient handyman, but need some advice on the steps involved in filling the old windows and framing in new ones.In the future I will also be installing outside house wrap and siding. I would appreciate any advise you could give

Answer:

First, you'll have to do much of your re-location before the upper level is worked on because in order to get a permit, you'll have to submit drawings and your local building authority will want to ensure that you have sufficient structural integrity to support a second level. Re-locating windows and doors means installing supporting lintels and headers above the new ones and that can, at times, be a bit of challenge; particularly if the new location happens to overlap the existing. If you're going to contract out the largest portion of the project, you might want to consider also contracting out the re-locations.
