Question:

Last spring we purchased a fixer-up cottage and one of the things that will need to be done is replace the windows. We have 5 windows that are all approximately the same size 35 " x 30 ". We had looked at purchasing second hand but have decided to buy new and were told to stay with the same size as we did not want to start looking at changing the headers. As we are new at this and would like to do the work ourselves can you please give us some tips or ideas of what we should be looking out for or considering for this project.

Answer:

You seem to have a pretty good handle on it already but you have to decide if this is going to remain a cottage or is it scheduled to be used more year 'round. If its the latter, you'll want to make sure the new windows are installed with the appropriate insulation and trim around them. I'd also want to replace the whole windows instead of replcing only with inserts. Your windows are already too small to start losing even more natural light.
