Question:

I am building a major addition to a tiny bungalow, adding three bedrooms, a living room and a cold storage area. My main concerns are safety, ventilation and insulation. You may recall that three people in one family died recently because of lack of oxygen when one after the other they went down to the cold room. How does one ventilate a cold room to avoid this kind of thing and what kind of door and insulation would you recommend?

Answer:

You're into an interesting project. There had to be more to it than a cold storage room by itself. Ventilation is actually quite simple and has worked this way ever since I've been dealing with them; more than forty years; Cold room should be fitted with four-inch ducts leading from holes in the upper walls to within six inches of the floor. These ducts should be fitted with appropriate dampers to control temperature in there. For a room larger than 25 sq. ft. I would want two such vents and for more than 100 sq. ft. I would want one of them to be fitted with an exhaust fan controlled by a thermostat.
