Question:

We have a very clean house. A bungalow in the country with a septic system. Built in 1984. Septic tank cleaned out in 1994. Since then, two people in the house. I use the yeast monthly in the toilet over the last 2-3 years. We are gone most weekends. We went away on this past weekend and closed up everything as usual. We have two bathrooms. On return, there is a strong urine smell in the large bathroom. But, nowhere else in the house. It was not there when we left. I have opened the window, it is not enough. The smell is not from the toilet or the washer which is in the same room, and I cannot figure it out. Any ideas, other than to burn down the house? A prompt response would be appreciated.

Answer:

The odour is not urine. It is a form of mildew and if you ventilate and dry out the bathroom it will go away until the next time you leave things all closed up for extended periods.
