Expert Q
Question:
Would like to re - do my kitchen floor. Presently done in sheet lino but many squeaks. Have had many people look at it and every time I get a different answer. Everything to floating the floor to a new decking. Uneven floors etc. What the underfloor is, is K3 over plywood. The whole house is plywood and I get the I know better headshake when I mention it. What should be done please other than just fastening the floor with screws and proceeding from there.
Answer:
You can get rid of the squeaks by removing everything but the sub-flooring and then using 1.5" plywood screws, attach the sub-flooring every 6 to 8 inches in the field and every 3 inches along the butted edges. Now, with white chalk, mark the walls so you know where the floor joists are. When installing the quarter-inch underlayment with screws, you will ensure that none of the screws go into floor joists. You no longer have any squeaks nor reason for them to develop. You can then seal the seams (but not the screw heads)with a cementicious product before laying in the new sheet vinyl.
