Question:

I plan on replacing all the hinges and knobs on my kitchen cabinet doors. The doors are 30 years old and made of some kind of particle-board. My concern is that when I remove the old hinges, the screws for the new hinges won't have anything to grab on to and then they won't be very secure. Is there a way to install new hinges so that the screws stay in place and are secure? I don't think that installing the hinges in a different spot is an option because it would look a bit strange.

Answer:

You can use different screws - fatter with courser thread on them - and that would hold. You may have to some hunting to find these screws.

In the interests of retaining credibility that I worked several decades to establish and in fairness to all, I don’t comment on various (building, electrical, plumbing) codes, brand-specific products, recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
