I am planning on building a workshop primarilly for woodworking. It will be the old grainery style with a peak roof and a second floor for storage. I plan do to construct a post and beam style with the 6x6's at 8' centres with appropriate cross pieces. It will be sided using board and batten 1x10 pine. I am trying to decide between a cement slab or a 1" or 2"x6" tongue and groove pine floor on sleepers. I would like to do a wood floor because old age is starting to set in.What are the pros and cons of each and what would be the best way to do the pads for the 6x6's and tie them into a footing. Or is there a different way of constucting a footing when using the wooden floor approach.
Answer:
The 6X6s will tie in wiht anything if you use the proper saddles that are available for them. The floor is going to be something else though. I think you'd be farterh ahead with a concrete slab and then lay in swimming-pool-deck interlocking tiles over it. These things are about 12"x12" and snap together. A shopvac will make it easier to keep it all clean and at the same time, it won't be as cold on your feet or hard on as your legs. Wood floors are too sensitive to moisture content for this kind of a project and you'll keep having to deal with the grooves.
