Question:

We need to replace our cement garage floor (45 yrs old). I heard you mention wooden garage floors on one of your shows. Could you please give me more information on this.

Answer:

The garage floor does not need to be a concrete slab. Lay in 4X4 cedar sleepers 16" O.C. and fill up the gaps with 5/8" gravel, then 3X12 spruce planks across them. Six-inch ardox nails with quarter-inch pilot holes drilled for them work very well to hold things together - 3 per plank per sleeper and off-set an inch or so from the grain in the cedar. Make the zig-zag nailing pattern follow from one plank to the next. Should you ever have to lift one of the planks you’ll need a tool called a ‘nail puller’.

In the interests of retaining credibility that I worked several decades to establish and in fairness to all, I don’t comment on various (building, electrical, plumbing) codes, brand-specific products, recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
