Question:

I am in the market to purchase a home outside Ottawa (ON). I went to visit one in the Almonte Pakenham area on the weekend. This house is on well and septic. As I was walking around the perimeter checking the eavestroughing I stepped on a board. I lifted the board to see what was under it and noticed the well, totally exposed,no cap.Is this illegal and I know there was some kind of a light fixture hanging inside.I suppose it may have been an ultrviolet light.

Answer:

Legallities aside, the well needs to have a cap if for no other reason than to keep vermin from falling in and fouling the water supply. There are various reasons for having electrical wiring in there (besides the one that powers the pump)and all of them point to water problems. I'd want the water tested at a chemical lab that can give you a 100% analysis of what's there before going any farther with the purchase.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
