Question:

I have a FAG furnance and I like to do some more maintenance on it. All I do now is replace the wrap around filter and use shop vac to clean. I would like to clean the fan blower but everything is contained, I cannot get to it. Don't ask me to get service guy to do maintenance. All he does is use a long thin vac tube and lubricate a few electrical connections and 80 bucks, thank you. My air conditioner must have a filter, but again the unit is completely sealed and contained. I don't even know is there is an air filter. If there was, I've had it since 2000, and no filter replaced.

Answer:

These units are sealed for a reason - to keep novice space cadets from monkeying with them. Your ownership manual will tell you all about how much service a non-professional can do on them without endangering the house, the furnace, the neighbours and the service provider.

In the interests of retaining credibility and in fairness to all, I cannot comment on specific products, recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Telephone and E mail information is always free so please don’t hesitate to take advantage of it.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
