We need to construct a front entrance ramp on our 150 year old colonial style home. Would you please give us some ideas on the best materials to use for the decking and also the side rails and supports? We are looking for function, looks, and ease of maintenance.
Answer:
This would be best done with 2" stock cedar for all but the decking. The decking could be a well preserved 5/8" plywood sheathing. To avoid slippriness you can either use an outdoor carpet or paint the deck with whatever you want but before the last coat dries, sprinkle a bit of sand with something like a salt shaker on it.
Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
